Describing percentages and fractions in IELTS Writing Task 1

When you look at an IELTS Writing Task 1, it is often full of numbers and possibly percentages too. But how can you use a wide range of vocabulary when describing percentages?

In this blog post, I’ll be looking at different ways to describe percentages.

Percent or percentage?

Firstly, let’s look at the difference between percent and percentage.


  • 65 percent of people in the school prefer coffee.
  • 65% of people in the school prefer coffee.
  • A large percentage of people in the school prefer coffee.

As you can see, we use percent or % to give a specific amount.

We use percentage to give a more general idea of the amount.

Pie charts

Have a look at this pie chart about recycled materials:

Look at the figure for glass. A simple sentence would be:

  • The amount of glass recycled was 26%.

But, what fraction is it close to?

That’s right – a quarter, which is 25%. The figure for glass is not exactly a quarter though, so we can use a phrase such as just over, approximately or slightly more than in our sentence.

  • The amount of glass recycled in 2016 was just over a quarter.

Similarly, we can also use just under, approximately or slightly less than if the figure is lower than the fraction or percentage.

  • Approximately two thirds of people prefer coffee in the office.


What other fractions can we use in Writing Task 1?

  • three quarters (75%)
  • two thirds (66%)
  • a half (50%)
  • a third (33%)
  • a quarter (25%)

There are, of course, other fractions, but these are the ones I’d recommend using. Remember, it’s not a mathematics exam!

Look back at chart 1. Which recycled material am I describing here?

  • This material accounted for approximately a third of all recycled material.

Remember: If there are percentages in your chart, try to use a mixture of percentages and fractions to demonstrate your range of vocabulary.

Look at the figure for plastic. Which of the following sentences is NOT correct?

  • Approximately half of the materials recycled were made of plastic.
  • Recycling of plastic accounted for just under half of the total materials.
  • The amount of plastic recycled was 48 percentage.
  • The amount of plastic recycled was approximately 50%.

Good! The third sentence is incorrect because it uses percentage after a specific number.

Can you write two more sentences using fractions or percentages? Try one sentence for each chart.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Many people invest a lot of their time into their social media image, such as uploading videos and pictures of themselves to the internet. What has led to this trend? How is this trend affecting people’s lives?
Give explanations and examples for your response.
You should write at least 250 words.

A lot of individuals spend many hours in the day on their presence in social media, like adding video clips and selfies to their profiles online. What has created this culture? How does this behavior impact people’s lives?

Give reasons and cases for your ideas.

Is this an open or a closed question? ? A: This is an open question, there are thousands of possible answers. *Your goal is to find the most rational and common answer possible! *Planning is especially important with open questions because it is easy to get lost in ideas and to go off topic!

Planning Process:

  1. Topic = investing much time into social media
  2. Controlling Idea(s) = the causes and consequences of this trend

First-person or third-person voice? A: Third-person voice of the author (no “I” or “you” in the essay)

Q: What does it mean to invest much time into social media image?

A: To use four or more hours daily to upload videos and images into social media profiles.

Q: Why do people invest so much time into their social media image?

A: to be validated by society. To gain approval. To gain popularity to be recognized by society. To earn money. To share their experiences with others. To gain sympathy or empathy from others. To make friends and to build a community. For excitement and entertainment. (These points can be connected!)

Q: How do people do this?

A: By uploading pictures of themselves, their activities and their interests.

Controlling Ideas:

Q: What has led to this trend?

A: Many people have access to devices and software to use social media. Humans are social by nature and take opportunity to form connections with others. 

Q: How does spending four hours a day on social media image impact people’s lives? (*Only think of the top three to four answers!)

A: less time is spent on face-to-face interactions. Some become more social. Creating a false image. Become more successful. — there are benefits and deficits depending on the user.  

THESIS STATEMENT – The argument/position which clearly answers the questions of Task 2:

The motivation behind spending much time on social media profiles is an innate human desire to be popular and successful. This behavior can be either a positive, leading to money and a high quality of life, or negative, leading to isolation and depression. 

Introductory paragraph (hook, background, thesis)

Spending hours a day on social media accounts is now a global phenomenon. Millions of people invest three or more hours daily to upload pictures and videos of themselves and their experiences to share with friends, family, and the world. The motivation behind spending much time on social media profiles is an innate human desire to be popular and successful. This behavior can be either a positive, leading to money and a high quality of life, or negative, leading to isolation and depression.

How to Improve your Listening Skills in English

My advice for IELTS students is the following:

Develop a listening habit 

Choose the same time and same place everyday where you will practice listening. Even if you only do 10 minutes a day, if you can get into the habit, then you will gradually make the improvement you need over time. 

Listen to both shorter and longer listening texts

It’s important to analyse texts, doing intensive listening practice as mentioned above, but you also need to get used to listening to longer texts, as well as staying focussed for a longer period of time.

The IELTS listening test lasts 30 minutes (+ an extra 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet), so you need to build your stamina and ability to stay focussed for a long time.

Listen to a one-minute listening passage 4 or 5 times

This repetition is really useful for building listening skills.

The first time you listen, you could listen, and make a note of, single words you recognise. The second time, try to see what words are used together with those words (what are the collocations). The third time, try to identify the general meaning of the whole passage and write ONE sentence to summarise it. The fourth time, listen for more details. The fifth time, listen for the mood or attitude of the speakers.

Transcribe short passages, 20 to 30 seconds long

Listen to a passage and write down everything your hear. This is really good old-fashioned dictation, but is very effective to identify meaning and sounds, especially if you go back and check the original script. For this reason it is good to use listening texts that have a transcript.

Two great tools for this are

Use Voice Typing 

This is a nice way to practice listening and pronunciation skills. On Google docs you can use the voice typing tool to say something and then the tool will automatically write what you say – if it understands you!

Practice listening only once.

Whereas it is good to listen to a passage many times to help build your listening skills, in the IELTS listening you only get to listen one time, so make sure in your practice, you are also listening to some texts just once.

There is a saying that ‘Nothing great comes without risk’ and I wholeheartedly believe in that. There are many situations in a person’s life where he/she has to take risks. Well, there were also many incidents and ups and downs in my life where I had to choose the risky one. I will be talking about one incident which affected my life and turned it over.

Why Did You Take It?
I was in standard 12th and people say this was the time when students need to choose their career so that it becomes their profession later on. Well, it was a difficult time then. I was a science student but not really interested in the subject as I am interested in Literature. I had written my competitive exams, and the results were quite decent so that I can choose CSE in a government college.

What was The Result?
That is when I had to decide what to choose. Choosing CSE was a wise option because it had a secure profession. My mother had always supported me to choose my interests, but I also wanted to choose something to make her happy. Doing engineering was something that she liked. I had to choose something fast because the offer for CSE was to expire soon. Then, I did what I thought would risk my life. I opted for the long term to help me choose.

How Do You Feel About It?
I was very thankful to myself for choosing the risk because I had thought it through and now I am doing what I am interested in. My mother was the greatest motivation in my risk and she gave me the power to continue what makes me happy. I think taking risks can land you in three things, the same situation, a positive situation or a negative situation. But, as long as one is happy and satisfied with what they choose, they will achieve what they want.

IELTS Speaking: What was It?
Taking risks can either lead you or bury you. People say a wise person never takes risks, but I want to say that a wise person always takes risks to become successful. Well, all the successful people today have taken risks in life that’s why they are standing there. According to the surveys, people even say that only 10 percent of the population can take risks and achieve their dreams and these are the people who change society for the better.
I want to express one situation where I had to take a risk. Well, it was a mental situation but, needed to act fast. It was  when I went to a zoo on a school trip.

Why Did You Take It?
I was usually with my friend’s group and we were walking around, talking, laughing and watching animals. Suddenly we heard cries and shouts from the side of the lion’s cage. The cage was big enough and it had a canal around the forest that the lion was living in.

When we reached there, half jogging and half running, we saw a ten-year-old kid, who had gone in through the barriers and had fallen into the canal which was not too deep. The kid was unconscious and his parents were crying, the father was holding his wife who was trying to jump in. Meanwhile, people were thinking and calling the zoo staff, who informed them that they will be there in 5 minutes. But, there was no time for that, the lion had stopped the child and was now crossing the forest.

What was The Result?
Well, this was a situation where it was risky and I had to act fast. I got an idea, because people had brought a rope, but were not able to reach him. I ran to them and told them that they had to tie the rope around my waist and I would go down and when I held the child they would pull me up. Thankfully, the teachers were not around me and in 10 seconds I was tied to the rope and went down. The lion had sped up, watching me, it was going to jump in the water when they pulled us up.

The risk might have made me lose my life, but I couldn’t stand there watching a life gone. Their parents were more than thankful and people around cheered on me and told me that my parents were lucky to have a child-like me. I felt happy and glad that I helped him and now he is safe. Risks are meant to be taken.

Q1. What motivates certain people to participate in extreme sports?
It is dependent on the goal. Some people participate in extreme activities for the money, as sports are quite expensive. Sports also feel natural or in a difficult way for some people, and they do that as a passion for others. As a result, there might be a variety of causes.

Q2. Do action movies have a following in your country?
Of course, particularly Indian films. They are very popular among my country’s youth, and events have occurred as a result of others attempting to mimic them.

Q3. Do you believe that a leader who enjoys taking chances is a positive thing?
Of course, I believe that a leader should also take risks and difficulties. It’s always thought of as a leadership trait. These leaders are crucial to society because they are always willing to accept responsibility for others.

Q4. Do you believe men and women will create separate risk-taking decisions?
There used to be a difference between men and women when it came to taking risks, but currently, there is no such distinction. Women now appear to be taking greater risks than males at work and at home in order to maintain a balanced life.

Cue Card # 162: Situation in which you did not know what to do

Describe a situation in which you did not know what to do.

You should say:

  • when and where it was
  • what the situation was
  • why you did not know what to do

and explain what you finally did in this situation.

[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

Model Answer:

It was almost two years ago when I got into a situation which was unexpected, perplexing and a bit embarrassing! And this topic brings back those memories as if they are still fresh, though I do not look at this event to be as embarrassing as it seemed back then. I’d like to thank you for letting me talk about this.

On that eventful day, which was probably Sunday, I met one of my friends at a cafe just after the evening. We discussed how we should better plan and prepare our group assignment to get A+. It took almost two hours and I decided to take my friend to a restaurant to have dinner. And that was the beginning of the whole embarrassment!

Anyway, we headed to a nice restaurant, ordered some traditional dishes for dinner and was discussing the assignment. We were waiting for our food to arrive (I was hungry for sure), but unfortunately, my friend’s boyfriend (I did never meet him before) arrived before our food did! Directly in my line of view, I saw a young man, he seemed somewhat bitter and hasty, of our age approaching our table. He bought a chair and sat at our table and I did not yet know him. He looked at my friend while completely ignoring me and started some heated debate with her.

All of a sudden and to my utter surprise, he asked me if I was having an affair with her girlfriend! I did not know what to say or what to do. It was absurd and I was so embarrassed about the whole event that I was not sure if I should leave or stay or take part in their conversation to defend myself. Our food came in the meanwhile but I was not hungry anymore. I could not help but notice some inquisitive eyes around us.

These days, if I think of it, it seems silly and dull. But I was clueless and startled when I was in the situation on that day. My friend’s boyfriend, whose name I learned later to be “Michel”, was angry and ferocious and wasn’t interested to hear anything that I wanted to say. So, I had no clue what I should be doing.

Well, considering the gravity of the situation, my friend and her boyfriend’s emotional distress and rage, I remained silent for the next 20 minutes or so and ignored the prying eyes around us. I talked to both of them when the situation got better and they calmed down a bit. Finally, I should probably mention that I had to pay a hefty amount of money for the food that I did not even touch!

Sample Answer

I believe a lie spoken for someone’s benefit is better than truth. So, telling a lie momentarily for someone’s good is not a bad thing in my point of view. To the best of my recollection, today I want to talk about a time when I had to hide a bitter truth from my friend. His name is Mukul, one of my closest friend and I love spending time with him, sharing my happiness and sorrows. Last year, we were appearing for UPSC exam. As he was a very bright student since his childhood, he did all his best to crack this exam, studied 14 hours every day with full concentration and dedication.
Everything was proceeding as planned before the exam. We stayed up late together, working for final revision and solving all the questions that might appear in exams. Then just before the final day of the exam I accidentally picked up his phone while he went outside to get some fresh air.
The call was from his aunty. It was a pickle situation as his father was hospitalized due to heart attack. But somehow, I accumulated
my thoughts and told his aunty about the exams and explained everything. The only thing that came to my mind was that how is
he going to take it, will he be able to write his exams after this or not. Finally, I decided that we should not tell Mukul about this before exam.
When Mukul came back I pretended like nothing has happened and gave our exams to the best of our abilities. Finally, after returning to the hostel I decided to break the news to him. He started crying immediately. We booked his ticket and he left off immediately for his hometown. He did not talk to me for the entire vacation period.
Later, he cracked the exam with a very good rank and then he came to me and said that he was grateful for what I did. We are still good friends as we were before.

Q1. Do you think we should tell truth at all times?
Ans. Honestly speaking, telling truth shows you care for others, but we cannot tell the truth all the time.
Sometimes the truth may hurt the feelings. It does not mean that you should tell lies to others; in fact, you can hide the truth for some time and speak it later for someone’s benefit.

Q2. How do you know when others are telling the truth?
Ans. From my experience, I get to know that someone is telling a lie by their facial expressions. For example, people start sweating or avoiding eye contact when they are lying. However, sweating might also be due to other reasons and therefore it is not easy to determine if people are indeed lying or just physically uncomfortable.

Q3. Do you think it is important to win the game or follow the rules?

Ans. As I mentioned above, lie spoken for someone’s benefit is better than truth. But it does not mean that we should speak lies all the time.

IELTS Speaking Part 1 – Television – Band 9

Buy a quality face mask before your speaking that does not sit directly on your mount but protrudes a couple of cm away, so that you have room to breath and talk and it does not ride up and down your face.

Go to your speaking exam about 1 hour before, so that you can get comfortable with the situation, go to the washroom if needed AND!!! Find another candidate to practice your speaking WEARING the mask. 

Mental checklist notepaper with you on the exam day that reminds you of key strategies and points to pay attention to in your speaking interview. You should create this sheet with five to six points in your practice sessions leading up to the exam. 


Mental Checklist:

  • Remember to use quantitative information – numbers to give good explanations!
  • Use the question grammar and vocabulary in the answers. 
  • Look at the questions on the cue card during the 2 minutes in Part 2 and answer ALL of them in the first 90 seconds.

I love reading books about quantum physics in my spare time because exploring the holonomic universe is a very interesting take on the possible nature of existence. Just the other day I read an interesting book on this topic titled the Dripping Faucet. 


Let’s talk about television

How often do you watch the TV?

I occasionally watch television, I would say about three to four times a week for about an hour. I usually watch a documentary to learn about history or the world around me. Just the other day I watched ‘A life on planet earth’ a documentary by David Attenborough. 

What is your favorite TV show? Why?

My favorite show recently has been Game of Thrones. Although it is very violent and vulgar, it gives and incredibly detailed depiction of medieval times in a fantasy world and the story is quite captivating. It airs every Monday at 9pm Pacific Standard Time. 

Where in the house do you keep your TV?

Is it healthy for children to watch TV?

Have TV shows changed since you were a child?

Yes, I think the shows over the years have become very different than in the past. Of course as technology has improved so too has the audio and visual qualities of tv series and movies, beyond that the content in many cases has become worse. When I was a childe there was a lot less violence and more meaningful messages to production.
